In the UK, you’ll find plenty of seaside coastal retreats, towns and holiday spots, yet this historic, vibrant, upcoming and rich maritime city has everything someone would want to experience for a memorable city break, seaside holiday or a day trip.
Welcome to Portsmouth, England’s only island city.

The city of Portsmouth is also nicknamed by locals as Pompey. It’s thought that Pompey is originated from the naval slang used when referring to historic Portsmouth Point. Which is the area we are standing in at the moment.
The abbreviation “Pom. P.” or “Pompey” was used in ships’ logs and on navigational charts as a shortened way of writing “Portsmouth Point,” a location near the harbor entrance known for its taverns frequented by sailors. Portsmouth point, was also known as Spice Island, which was known as the main port for imported spices from the Caribbean.
Maybe it is the narrow cobbled streets and pubs or the bustle of fishing boats, ferries, pilot boats and yachts but The Point has a timeless feel to it and is the perfect spot to immerse yourself in a little of Portsmouth’s spicy history.

Portsmouth is sometimes overshadowed by more popular places like the Isle of Wight and London, but its rich history, cuisine, and myriad of attractions make it an awesome place to explore.
More importantly, the city caters to just about every type of traveler: families will no doubt appreciate the many kid-friendly attractions in Portsmouth such as the Historic Dockyard and the Blue Reef while other travelers have it made with spots like the Promenade, Albert and Palmeston road for its lively nightlife, maybe taking in the views in Gunwharf or enjoying some of the historic charm old Portsmouth has to offer.

Whether you’re chasing adventure, looking for unique photo opportunities, or simply want to soak up some history, Portsmouth certainly has it all! Hopefully, this video guide will make it a bit easier for you to plan the perfect Portsmouth itinerary that’ll guarantee a memorable time in this naval and vibrant city!
